Lord Young Visits 3M on IPT Fellowship

Lord Young of Norwood Green visited the 3M head office in Bracknell as part of his Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) Fellowship* focusing on apprenticeships and manufacturing.

The Cain Road centre is home to the 3M Customer Innovation Centre, which was opened by Prof. Brian Cox in 2014 and is designed to showcase the story of 3M’s innovation, technology and collaboration with its customers and business partners. It is also used as an educational resource for local schools and colleges, designed to inspire the engineers and scientists of the future.

After receiving a briefing about the company’s organisation and operations, Lord Young spent time with 3M’s Lynette Blake and John Klee, who are responsible for its apprenticeship and STEM programmes, to find out more about what 3M is doing to promote the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths to young people, especially within the local community.

Lord Young was then taken on a tour of the Customer Innovation Centre where he was able to see first-hand an interactive range of 3M technology and the innovative solutions they produce. He was also shown the workshops and breakout areas where collaboration occurs between 3M and its customers.

Lord Young’s Fellowship is helping him to further his knowledge of the way in which organisations are training their apprentices in order to fulfil the demand for highly skilled people in order to boost the workforce of the future.

Commenting on the visit Lord Young said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to 3M. The Customer Innovation Centre truly is a tribute to 3M’s commitment to innovation, and it was fantastic to see the technology brought to life. The work that 3M does within its local communities to encourage and inspire young people to get involved with STEM subjects is excellent and I would like to thank everyone who made today’s visit such a success.”

3M Public Affairs manager Tony Bellis added:

“We were delighted to be able to host Lord Young’s visit. It was great to see him interacting with the technology in the Customer Innovation Centre and we were pleased to be able to explain about the work 3M is doing to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists. Lord Young obviously has a passion for skills and apprenticeships and we are grateful to the IPT for facilitating this visit.”
