Chris Matheson MP’s Fellowship Takes to the Skies with Heathrow Airport

Chris Matheson, MP for City of Chester and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Aerospace, visited Heathrow Airport as part of his Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) Fellowship* in Aviation.

Heathrow Airport was recently named the 2016 Best Airport in Europe (>40 million passengers) by the Airports Council International at their annual Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards Heathrow also achieved its best ever annual ASQ passenger satisfaction score while welcoming a record 76 million passengers through its doors.

The visit began with a tour the NATS Control Tower where Chris saw first-hand how the NATS controllers safely guide 1,350 aircraft movements each day across the world’s two busiest runways at Heathrow.

Chris was then given an overview of Heathrow’s operations and heard about the types of improvements that are currently being made to enhance passenger experience in their departure lounges. He also learnt about how Heathrow is creating jobs across the UK through boosting the number of SMEs in its supply chains, as well as Heathrow 2.0 – the airport’s new sustainability strategy.

Chris’ IPT Fellowship is helping him to gain a greater understanding of the aviation and airspace industry within the UK in order to aide him in his role as Chair of the APPG on Aerospace.

Commenting on the visit Chris Matheson MP said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Heathrow Airport this morning and I would like to thank all of the Heathrow staff and NATS who made it possible. It was fascinating to see first-hand the way in which one of the world’s busiest airports operates and the passion they have for improving sustainability as well as customer experience. My visit has certainly helped to broaden my knowledge of the UK aviation sector and I look forward to future Fellowship visits with the IPT.”

Abigail Morris, Head of External Affairs at Heathrow Airport added:

“We were delighted to host Chris at Heathrow this morning, and show him ‘behind the scenes’ of the world’s most efficient two runway airport and show him how we keep the UK’s hub airport running every day, 365 days a year. Chris has a clear passion for aviation, and it was great to discuss with him the benefits our industry generates for the UK, particularly around skills, employment, and exports. We look forward to working with Chris in the future to maximise benefits of Heathrow expansion for North West businesses and passengers.”

END.
