Lord Young Visits 3M on IPT Fellowship

Lord Young of Norwood Green visited the 3M site in Newton Aycliffe, on Tuesday 25 April. The visit took place as part of his Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) Fellowship* focusing on apprenticeships and manufacturing.

3M Aycliffe manufactures industrial facial protection and respiratory equipment. The factory specialises in manufacturing filters for respirators which prevent workers from inhaling dangerous dust and vapours whilst at work.

During the visit, the former Opposition Spokesperson for Business, Innovation and Skills, was given an overview of 3M globally as well as its operations at Newton Aycliffe.

Lord Young was also given a tour of the manufacturing plant and a briefing on research and development at the plant as well as a tour of the development facilities by Tony Stanford, Technical Manager.

The visit concluded with a briefing and lunch where Lord Young found out more about 3M’s apprenticeship programme which trains around 30 apprentices each year across a number of different areas such as engineering, IT and business administration. Lord Young also met some of 3M’s apprentices based at the site, and during lunch had the opportunity to speak to them about their training and experiences working at 3M.

Lord Young’s Fellowship is helping him to further his knowledge of the way in which organisations are training their apprentices in order to fulfil the demand for highly skilled people in order to boost the workforce of the future.

Commenting on the visit Lord Young said:

“3M is a company built upon innovation and it was fantastic to be able to see how 3M is training its workforce of the future through its apprenticeship scheme. As technology advances, it is vital that young people are properly equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to work within an ever changing workplace. I was very impressed by 3M and all of the staff and apprentices I met today and I look forward to my final 3M Fellowship visits to their Loughborough site next month.”

3M Newton Aycliffe site manager Colin MacLeod added:

“We were delighted to welcome Lord Young at 3M Newton Aycliffe today. He is exceptionally passionate about skills and apprenticeships and it was great to be able to show him how we are training the workforce of the future through our apprenticeship programme.”

ENDS.
