Parliamentary Attachment Scheme

Civil Service

The IPT's unique training scheme provides an invaluable development opportunity for civil servants to build upon their parliamentary knowledge through an arranged attachment to an MP. Civil servants undertaking the attachment will gain a solid insight into the responsibilities and time constraints faced by an MP as they experience working life alongside them.

The scheme has cross-party and government support, is endorsed by Civil Service Learning and the IPT are registered as an approved training provider. Participation is subject to departmental approval.

How the Scheme Works

A successful applicant onto the MP Attachment Scheme can expect to attend at least one half-day seminar in the House of Parliament and two days in the company of an MP on a one-to-one basis. In addition, the applicant will also have the choice to attend all complimentary optional training seminars, focusing on select committees, legislation and parliamentary questions.

Places are limited and applications will be accepted by the IPT on a ‘first come first served’ basis.

The cost of the MP Attachment Scheme is £950.

The department is responsible for all associated costs when the civil servant undertakes their attachment. The department or agency of each participant civil servant pays the appropriate fee for the chosen programme as described above and is also responsible for all other costs when the attachment is undertaken including travel and subsistence i.e. any expenses in relation to the time spent with the parliamentarian.
