The Weatherill Bursary Scheme

The IPT runs a Scheme to provide bursaries for SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) to attend its study programmes for business people.

The Scheme is named in honour of the Rt Hon Lord Weatherill DL (1920-2007), the 154th Speaker of the House of Commons, who was instrumental in the founding of the Industry and Parliament Trust. He was a constant friend of the IPT, and a supportive and influential figure throughout its history. He served as Chairman, President and Vice-President. Lord Weatherill’s family and friends have contributed to the Scheme, knowing his passion to encourage the SME sector to engage more with parliamentarians.

What Does the Bursary Cover?

Successful organisations will receive one place on either of the IPT’s core training programmes:

  • Understanding Parliament - a one-day programme held in Westminster
  • Introduction to the EU - a two-day study programme held in Brussels.

A maximum of two bursaries may be awarded per year.

Who Can Apply?

The Scheme is open to any company that meets one of the following SME definitions:

  • ‘Medium’ = < £23.5m turnover; 50-249 employees
  • ‘Small’ = < £6m turnover; 0-49 employees
  • ‘Micro’ = < £1.2m turnover; 0-10 employees
