The recent call for evidence by the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology Committee for the UK mobile market highlights the importance of connectivity in achieving the Government’s growth and innovation priorities. On the UK’s road to standalone 5G coverage in all populated areas, it is important to discuss whether our infrastructure remains fit for purpose in a digital age. Mobile data usage has increased by 500% since 2018, illustrating the demand for the UK population to have fast, reliable data. Since its deployment in 2023, standalone 5G has been extended to 83% of UK premises, however full coverage will require long term investment. According to Mobile UK, streamlining upgrade processes could unlock £1–2.5 billion in accumulated GDP by allowing new coverage and capacity to come online sooner. How can industry and parliament work together to ensure our digital infrastructure can provide the connectivity we need for innovation and economic growth?
This event will:
- Evaluate the updates necessary to innovate our digital infrastructure and provide high quality, reliable and affordable connectivity for the future.
- Examine the parts of the UK that are still lacking access to fast and reliable 5G coverage.
- Assess how we can attract investment into innovative technologies to boost connectivity and drive growth.
