Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are essential to the UK’s path to net zero. SMEs represent 99% of all UK businesses and, although they have a relatively small environmental impact on an individual level, collectively they contribute 43-53% of the UK’s greenhouse gas (GNG) emissions, according to the British Business Bank (BCC). Research from UK Finance shows that adopting sustainable practices can help SMEs attract environmentally conscious consumers and employees, enhance their brand reputation through the “halo effect,” and reduce long-term operational costs. However, many SMEs lack the time, capacity, or financial resources to fully address their environmental impacts. Research by the BCC revealed that an alarming 76% of SMEs had not yet implemented comprehensive sustainability strategies as of 2021. How can we ensure that UK SMEs receive the necessary support for the transition to net zero, ensuring that no SME is left behind?

This event will:

  • Discuss the importance of SMEs in reducing the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and their contribution to environmental sustainability.
  • Consider the common challenges SMEs face in adopting comprehensive sustainability measures.
  • Explore the governmental support that SMEs require to successfully transition to net zero.
