Government Affairs Scheme | IPT

Government Affairs

The Government Affairs Course is a must-attend for those new to public affairs (or similar roles), or just interested in how companies can engage with Parliament. Beginning with an overview of Parliament, it also features guest talks from an MP and experienced public affairs professional to give a well-rounded insight into this world. The all-day, in-person session, will also include a tour of Westminster and will be taking place on Monday the 26th February.

All Government Affairs attendees are then automatically booked on to the next round of virtual seminars, which provide a more in-depth view of the functions within Parliament.

In-Person Session

Delegates will gain a good understanding of Parliament with the course providing information on:

  • The structure of Parliament, the roles of each House, and the interaction between them.
  • Legislation. The passage of a Bill through Parliament from introduction to Royal Assent. The making of secondary legislation (regulations, statutory instruments, etc).
  • The role of select committees in each House of Parliament.
  • Parliamentary questions; oral and written in both Houses.

Virtual Sessions

The follow-up virtual sessions will be around 75 minutes long, dates below:

  • Wednesday 6th March - Legislation
  • Thursday 7th March - Select Committees
  • Wednesday 13th March - Parliamentary Questions
  • Tuesday 19th March -  Devolution
