Understanding Parliament Virtual Seminar | IPT

Overview

Understanding Parliament is an introductory seminar that gives an overview of Parliament. It looks at the difference between Parliament and the Government, the makeup of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and how voting works. This seminar will be on Wednesday 26th March 2025 at 14:30, lasting around 75 minutes. 

Delegates will gain a good understanding of the functions of Parliament including:

  • The structure of Parliament, the roles of each House, and the interaction between them.
  • Legislation. The passage of a Bill through Parliament from introduction to Royal Assent. The making of secondary legislation (regulations, statutory instruments, etc).
  • The role of select committees in each House of Parliament.
  • Parliamentary questions; oral and written in both Houses.

Who should attend

This course is designed for anyone who works in an environment which is related to Parliament and wishes to develop their knowledge of it.

It is well suited to public servants, academics and those from the voluntary and private sectors who are interested in gaining an understanding of the parliamentary process.
