Theo Clarke MP visits HarperCollins | IPT

Industry and Parliament Trust Fellowship

I am delighted to have begun my fellowship with the Industry and Parliament Trust. I am looking forward to spending time over the next 18 months learning more about the contribution of the creative industries to our economy.

My first visit was to the UK headquarters of the publishing company HarperCollins. HarperCollins is the second largest book publisher in the world, publishing books by many well-known authors, including J.R.R Tolkien, who used to live in my Stafford constituency. I had a fascinating meeting with Charlie Redmayne, Chief Executive of HarperCollins, discussing the UK’s role as a world leader in exporting books.

I met with people who work on the different elements of HarperCollins’ business who raised with me the importance of freedom of speech and the various implications of copyright law. I was also taken through the step-by-step process of a book being created, from the initial proposal all the way through to publication.

This visit has provided me with a much deeper insight into the publishing sector and the vital role that businesses, such as HarperCollins, play in improving literacy. I would like to thank the IPT, the Publishers’ Association and HarperCollins for such an informative visit.
