Innovation & Investment: Commercialising Research in the UK

On Monday 07 March, the Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) hosted a dinner discussion between parliamentarians, industry representatives and academics entitled ‘Innovation & Investment: Commercialising Research in the UK.’ The discussion was chaired by Professor Baroness Brown of Cambridge, Chair of the Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology. It welcomed guest speaker Thomas Birk, Managing Director, UK&I at BASF. The discussion focused on discovering ways to commercialise and capitalise UK research.

Key Discussion Points:

  • Considered what role public procurement could play in creating early markets for innovations and products to speed development and uptake.
  • Discussed how to support research and innovations to be spun out of universities, including the role of industry-academic partnerships.
  • Explored where the UK can make gains in coming advances such as the role of AI and quantum.

The Route to Net Zero Water

On Tuesday 08 March, the Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) hosted a dinner discussion between parliamentarians, industry representatives and academics entitled ‘The Route to Net Zero Water.’ The discussion was chaired by Rt Hon Philip Dunne MP, Chair, Select Committee on Environmental Audit. It welcomed guest speakers Sarah Bentley, Chief Executive Officer at Thames Water, James Jesic, Managing Director for Customer Operations, Severn Trent and Professor Pierre McDonagh, Centre for Business, Organisations and Society, University of Bath. The discussion focused on ways to achieve the goal of decarbonising the water sector.

Key Discussion Points:

  • Considered how to build a smarter water system.
  • Explored the potential of green job growth in the sector and the skills required to drive decarbonisation.
  • Examined future regulatory standards, including the possible role for a mandatory water efficiency label.
